The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

To date, some 92,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program established in 1954. As of May 1, 2011, there were 9,396 foreign students studying in Japan as Japanese government scholarship students.

Since 1994, the Government of Japan awarded Research (Graduate) Student Scholarships to over 30 Jamainans, 3 Belizeans and 1 Bahamian to pursue Masters and Doctorial studies in Japan. This year, Undergraduate Student Scholarship and College of Tehnology Student Scholarship have become available for Jamaican citizens for the first time. For Belizean citizens, Undergraduate Student Scholarship has become availabe.

This scholarship is open to to university graduates from Jamaica, The Bahamas and Belize. The Scholarship covers an 18 month – 2 year period of graduate research at Japanese universities. The study area must be in the same field as the applicant studied or is now studying, or a related field. Recipients may enter Master’s or Ph.D. program after passing the entrance examination given by the university concerned. The scholarship includes a half-year of Japanese language training for those who need Japanese language training. Applicants must be less than 35 years of age (born on or after April 2, 1981), and must be university graduates.

  • June-July… Examinations and Interviews for shortlisted candidates
  • July 2015… Notification of shortlisted candidates
  • July – August 31, 2015… Shortlisted candidates are required to contact directly the Japanese universities of his/her choice in order to obtain acceptance letters from at least three universities (preferably national universities). Candidates are not allowed to contact Japanese universities beyond September 1.
  • January 2016… Notification of results
  • April or October 2016… Departure for Japan

2. Undergraduate Students

This scholarship is open to Jamaican and Belizean high school graduates and above. This scholarship is available to high school graduates for attending a Japanese university as an undergraduate student. The scholarship includes a one-year Japanese language program at a Japanese language school prior to attending a Japanese university for 4 years as an undergraduate student. Recipients will receive a bachelor’s degree in Japan. Applicants must be between 17 to 21 years of age (must be born between April 2, 1994 and April 1, 1999), and must have completed 12 years of education by March 2016 or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school.

3. College of Technology Students

This scholarship is open to Jamaican high school graduates and above. This scholarship is open to Jamaicans and covers a four-year period of technical study in the following areas: civil engineering, architecture, electrical engineering, electronics, and others (please see the document which states Majors and Related Key Terms for Field of Study for further details). The scholarship includes a one-year Japanese language program at a Japanese Training College. It is available to high school graduates who are between 17 to 21 years of age (must be born between April 2, 1994 and April 1, 1999).
